Operators first. Consultants because the market kept asking.
California Liquor Expert is an independent spirits consulting and valuation practice based in San Diego, serving brands, bars, restaurants, retailers, insurers and attorneys across the United States.
We spent fifteen years on the operating side of beverage alcohol retail: buying, pricing, counting and selling an inventory of more than 15,000 SKUs, from everyday vodka to the most allocated whiskeys in the country. We know what distributors charge, what states require, what sells and what does not, and what it actually costs to put a bottle back on the shelf.
We built and ran our own businesses first: a San Diego retail operation whose sales we grew fifteen-fold through better buying and partnerships, and an e-commerce spirits business built from zero. Along the way, brands started asking us how to get placed and reordered, and operators started asking us what to carry and what to charge. We have now helped more than 80 spirits brands launch or relaunch into California, New York, Texas and Florida and built opening wine and spirits offerings for more than 25 stores and restaurants.
We also know what it is like to be on the wrong end of a bad inventory appraisal. After a total loss, the evaluator retained by the carrier priced our stock from invoices. Rare, allocated product carried at a few hundred dollars was worth more than ten times that to replace, and the appraiser did not recognize it. That experience is why the valuation side of this practice exists.
